Wild Wallabies Program – Ages 3–5 | Byron Bay Brunswick Heads Kids Holiday Activities

Wild Wallabies is Brunswick Bush School's nurturing nature connection program for 3-5 yr old kids. We run a 100% outdoor, all weather program. Two nature mentors gently guide the group for an adventure filled day of play, learning, exploring, crafting and story telling. We spend the day in wild nature offering an amazing and diverse playground that is rich with interactions and experiences building confidence and resilience.

Each session, they usually do a craft activity - such as clay modelling (like making echidnas), mask making, painting, collecting, or weaving to create something to take home at the end of the day. The day involves a morning circle, free play (hammocks, cubby time, sand kitchen, tree-climbing, etc), a short bushwalk and/or a swim or a low tide creek explore, stories, and the craft activity…

Week 1

Monday 6th July- Simpsons Creek Canoeing

One of our most popular activities, we spend the day on the beautiful Durrungbil (Brunswick River)

catching the incoming tide up the wild reaches of Simpson’s Creek paddling deep into the Tyagarah

Nature Reserve. We'll see plenty of bird life, see schools of fish and maybe spot a few of the local

stingrays. We stop for lunch on our own private beach on the river (for a swim if weather permits),

games and a bushwalk through beautiful bushland of tall eucalypts, grass trees and melaleucas.

Tickets: $105* *includes $15 Canoe hire

Tuesday 7th July- Death Traps and Snares

If you are in the wild and know how to set and use a trap it can be a much more efficient form of

collecting food than hunting prey which can be highly energy intensive. In this activity we explore the

essential bush survival skill of trapping small game using several different methods that have been

used by cultures all over the world for a millenia. Using simple equipment we'll have a lot of fun

crafting and making our own traps.

Tickets: $90

Wednesday 8th July/Thursday 9th July - Two day workshop: Whittle a Katana

A Katana is a fearsome Japanese style fighting sword with a long handle. Over two days we will whittle our swords from locally harvested privet, a tough wood suited for the purpose, we'll sand and oil them and practice our fighting moves in the time honoured tradion of the Samurai. If you can only attend one day please contact us. Recommended for children 7+

Tickets: $190* for both days *includes a $10 materials charge

Friday 10th July – Nature Play

Whenever we ask the children what their favourite part of the day was we often hear: "The games!" So

here we go, a day full of our most exciting and fun games. We'll run you ragged, test your skills,

challenge you and hone your teamwork muscles as we play Capture the Flag, Bush Turkey’s Tail,

Catch the Leopard’s Meat, Fire Keeper and more.

Tickets: $90

Week 2

New Activity! Monday 13th July and Tuesday 14th July- Two day workshop:  Make a fire piston

What is a Fire Piston I hear you ask?! There are many ways to start a fire and a fire piston uses the concept of compressed air to spontaneoulsly ignite a small piece of pre-pared cloth that you then transfer into a fire bundle and fan into a flame. A super fun tool to make and have in your kit of survival equipment, we'll be constructing ours from scratch using metal pipe and wood then we'll practice and learn how to use it to make a fire. If you can only attend one day please contact us. Recommended for children 7+

Tickets: $190* for both days *includes a $10 materials charge

Wednesday 15th July- Sling Shots

Sling Shots are a rite of passage for every bush kid. A fun toy that is great for hand eye coordination

and honing your hunting skills. Using forked branches from weed species we will be whittling, sanding

and oiling the wood we'll add rubber power bands a rock pouch and voila! A toy that will bring hours

of fun. To be used with adult supervision. * $5 materials charge.
