The Black Cockatoos is Brunswick Bush School’s weekly term-time nature connection program for children aged 6-12 years. Running for the last 10 years and based at the glorious Brunswick Heads, this program is a fun, adventurous day outside. We offer children lots of freedom and give them vital time and space to be and feel away from the pressures of modern life. Our program provides a fantastic setting for your child to learn bush skills while finding connection, building confidence and resilience.

Gently guided by two mentors (usually a male and female) the day is a mix of child-led and structured activities. We usually explore a different nature-based theme each term. Examples have included: learning about mangroves, plant identification, and bush tucker and we have taken on practical projects such as shelter building, animal tracking, whittling and nest box construction. We take our lead from the children and structure the program to suit their interests and learning needs.

The day is interspersed with games, free play, swimming (in summer) and sharing circles. We encourage a communal style of learning across the ages of the group and are big on building social and emotional skills, developing emotional intelligence and awareness through the program.

Exciting News! We are thrilled to launch our brand-new weekly program for teens this term.

Over the past few months, we’ve received many requests from parents and families seeking a regular, nature-based space for young people during this pivotal stage of life. In a world full of digital distractions, social noise, and rapid life transitions, youth need spaces where they can slow down, build real-world capability, and connect authentically.

This program has been a long-held dream of ours, and the timing couldn't be better. With an exceptional team of dedicated mentors, rich outdoor resources, and a deep passion for youth culture, we are ready to bring this vision to life.

Chrysalis: Teen Bush School

A weekly immersive wilderness program designed for teens aged 13 to 17 years to build self-reliance, practical outdoor skills, and genuine community.

Stepping away from screens and classroom walls, our Teen Bush School offers a dedicated day each week for youth to reconnect with nature, learn high-level bushcraft, and develop emotional resilience in a fun, supportive, mentor-led environment.

Guided by two experienced adult mentors, our program balances advanced skill-building and wilderness excursions with intentional unstructured time—giving teens the freedom, trust, and space they need to explore, collaborate, and grow at their own pace.

What the Program Covers:

  • Sharing Circles & Emotional Awareness: Cultivating active listening, self-reflection, emotional intelligence, and open conversation to build a strong, value-driven, and inclusive group culture.

  • Advanced Bushcraft: Hands-on advanced instruction in knife work, whittling and carving projects, shelter construction, weaving and rope work and traditional fire-making.

  • Regular Adventurous Wilderness Excursions: Guided hikes, bushwalks, canoeing, and trips to local water holes that test physical endurance and foster deep connection to country and local ecology.

  • Bush Tucker & Campfire Cooking: Harvesting bush tucker responsibly, understanding local flora and culture, and preparing meals over open coals.

  • Project-Based Learning & Resilience: We'll offer exciting, fun, engaging and challenging term based projects—that take their bush skills to the next level, building knowledge, capacity, resilience and confidence.

  • Unstructured Exploration: Essential space to decompress, swim, observe, socialize, and connect with the land on their own terms.
